NEWSLETTER MAY 29 - JUNE 1, 2012

 
Dear Parents,
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend.  
 
Here's what's going on this week:

SPELLING: No more Spelling Lists for the rest of the year!!

MATH:  This week, students will begin reviewing concepts previously learned this year and getting ready for 3rd grade!  We recommend you review with them at home by playing some of the games that are the Links heading at the bottom of this page.  A short cumulative review test will be given next Monday.

R/W: Students continue learning about Adjectives and writing a "How-To Essay".

READ ALOUD:  Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

SCIENCE: The students are really enjoying the Butterfly Unit.  This week we will learn about the  differences between butterflies and moths; students will be able to identify each by observing their characteristics.  Students will learn about butterfly symmetry and creating a symmetrical  pattern for the butterfly's wings.  The unit will culminate this Friday with a quick game of all we've learned!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  

RESULTS FROM THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY – What a wonderful General Assembly last Thursday!  Thanks so much to all of the parents and teachers who came to participate and exercise their right to vote.  It was a true celebration of who we are as a school community--where everyone had the opportunity to express their opinions and come together on decisions for the good of the students.  We approved the budget and school calendar, and elected 4 new members to our Board of Directors: Amanda Miller, Chris Mueller, Robert Myers, and Evy Williams.  Our sincere appreciation and thanks to the out-going Board members: Bryan Dwyer, Nina Glynn, Juan Sheenan, and Mark Wheeler for their hard work and dedication to the school.


THANKS TO THE DPTO – Thanks to the DPTO for a delicious lunch for our staff last Friday, to commemorate Teacher Appreciation Week.  We also want to thank Sandra Noguera, Carolina Villareal, Maikel Ryan and Eduardo Retes for their hard work this school year as our DPTO officers.  We are looking forward to our continuous work with the new DPTO officers for the 2012-2013 school year: Alexanderia Haidara, Yessika Palma and Ninoska Abate. 


SHORT DAY WEDNESDAY – This Wednesday is an early dismissal day for our students. 

DPTO GARAGE SALE –The DPTO would like to invite all our community to their annual GARAGE SALE which will take place on Saturday, June 2, beginning at 9:00 a.m.  If you are interested in a table, please contact Maikel Ryan or Carolina Villareal.  

CHOIR FUNDRAISING END-OF-THE-YEAR CARNIVAL –The Choir Parents are organizing and end-of-the-year Carnival and Bingo for Saturday, June 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the school.  There will be games, food, and of course the exciting Bingo.  Please come and celebrate the end of the school year with our family and friends while supporting the Choir in their last effort to raise funds for their upcoming San Francisco trip in July. 

ENROLLMENT DRIVE BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! –The Enrollment Drive is on!  The best PR you can give the school is by recommending us to your family, friends and colleagues.  If you need more information about the drive, please see Paola for a copy of the guidelines.

NEWSLETTER MAY 21 - 25 , 2012

Dear Parents,

Here's what's going on this week:

SPELLING: Number Words.

MATH:  We finish off our unit of Probability this week.  Students have really enjoyed this unit by predicting outcomes, collecting and analyzing data.  The unit culminates this Wednesday with a Chapter Test. 

R/W: Students will learn about Adjectives, read and discuss books in their reading level book clubs, and begin prewriting for a How-to Essay.

READ ALOUD:  Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

SCIENCE: The students are really enjoying the Butterfly Unit.  This week we will study about the predators that hunt butterflies and the defense mechanisms butterflies use to protect themselves.  There will also be a quick review of the anatomy of the butterfly by integrating the curriculum through butterfly math problems.
 
(Daily Oral Language): Self correct sentences.


ANNOUNCEMENTS:  

GENERAL ASSEMBLY – The second summons for the Spring General Assembly has been issued.  The General Assembly will take place this Thursday, May 24.  In it, our school community will be voting for the budget and calendar for the coming school year and electing Board members for the next two school years.  Please come and support our school by being a part of these important decisions that affect all of us.  We hope to see you there!

DANCING WITH THE 2nd GRADE STARS! – Our Second graders have been preparing a special show for all of you parents. The show will take place this Friday, May 25 at 2:30 in the Cafeteria Area.

NEWSLETTER MAY 14 - 18, 2012

Dear Parents,

Here's what's going on this week:

SPELLING: Compound Words.

MATH:  We finish off our unit of Measurement and begin to study Probability.  Students will predict the outcomes of simple experiments and record and analyze data collected from performing an experiment.

R/W: Tomorrow is our Author's Share Chair Day!  Students will be sharing their mystery stories tomorrow by reading them aloud to their classmates.  Please have them come dressed as detectives to share their published mysteries!

SCIENCE: After a wonderful introduction to Butterflies last week, the students will begin to learn about the Life Cycle of Butterflies, identify the Body Parts of a Caterpillar and Butterfly, and learn about their special diets.

MAP TESTING – MAP testing continues this week.  You can practice the various MAP skills by asking your child to play the online MAP reading games.  They can be found under the "Links" heading at the end of this newsletter.

ANGELINA's BIRTHDAY PARTY – On Monday, May 14th, 2012, Angelina will be inviting all second grade to pizza, drinks and a cake to celebrate her birthday.  On this day, students should bring no lunch.  

FRANCESCA's FAREWELL PARTY – On Friday, May 18th, 2012, Francesca will be inviting all second grade to pizza, drinks and cupcakes.  This will be a Farewell party for Francesca as she's leaving Honduras on Saturday.  On that day, students should bring no lunch.  

GENERAL ASSEMBLY – The General Assembly of parents has been postponed to Thursday, May 17, 2012.  The summons will be sent electronically and by hard copy to all parents.  We need a quorum of 33% of our parents in order to have a legal meeting.  During the meeting, members will vote on the budget and calendar for next year, as well as electing Board members for the next two years.  We hope to see you there!

NEWSLETTER MAY 7 - 11, 2012

MATH:  We continue with our unit of Measurement by focusing on measuring capacity and volume.   

R/W: Students' mystery stories are almost finished and ready for our Author's Share Chair on Thursday!   On that day (Friday11th), students must come dressed as detectives to share their published mysteries!

SCIENCE: Students begin a new science unit this week.  They will begin to study the Life Cycle of Butterflies!

MID TERM / PROGRESS REPORTS – Please send the signed Mid Term reports this week.

2nd GRADE COMPLIMENT PARTY!!– The Compliment Party has been scheduled for this Thursday 10th!  That day will be a day full of fun!  Students should not bring breakfast or lunch on that day.  A Burger King breakfast will be provided by the teachers, and there will be pizzas for lunch!  On that day, students are allowed to come with their pijamas on, they should all bring a pillow, and are allowed to bring video games.  They must also bring on a separate bag their bathing suits, towel and anything else they deem necessary for the water games (waterguns, etc)!  During the afternoon, they will enjoy a movie and popcorn.

NEWSLETTER MAY 3 - 5, 2012

Welcome back!  
We hope you enjoyed a well-deserved break!  This week will be a short one.  

Here's what's going on this week:

SPELLING: No Spelling Words this week.

MATH:  We continue with our unit of Measurement by focusing on measuring capacity and volume.  

R/W: This week we'll be culminating with our Mystery unit. The students will also finish writing their mystery story, with a focus on using quotation marks and word choice.  Be prepared to come dressed as detectives during our Author's Share Chair activity next week

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students continue their Economics Unit by understanding and applying the concepts of supply and demands, goods and services.

NEW DISCOVERY SCHOOL T-SHIRTS & POLOS The new "Home of the Wolves" t-shirts and polos are now available for purchase in our Finance office.  T-shirts are sold for $7 (L140) and polos for $13 (L250).  With every shirt sold, we are contributing to the Choir in their effort to raise funds for their San Francisco trip this summer.  Let's pitch in and build our school pride by wearing the Discovery School shirt on Friday!   

DRESS CODE Reminder to all parents and requesting support in this matter:  All students should be appropriate dressed in a manner that promotes academic seriousness.  The following is NOT ACCEPTABLE, among others (please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook, page 30 and 31):

  • Drug, alcohol or tobacco related cltohing, jewelry or paraphernalia
  • Clothing promoting sex, racism, violence or profanity
  • Clothing which, because of its briefness or tightness of fit is deemed distracting to the academic atmosphere
  • Strapless tops or tops with either shoulder bare
  • Shower-type flip-flops
  • Shorts or skirts that are shorter than mid-thigh
The school stresses the avoidance of extremes and reserves the right to request a student to change into more appropriate attire or call home to acquire more suitable dress.
