Dear Mom and Dad,
Today I am bringing home a “Flat Friend” who should accompany me on my adventures during one week. It is part of an exchange project that we are doing with third graders from The East End Elementary school in Dacusville, South Carolina.
The idea for this project came from a book that we have read at school entitled FLAT STANLEY by Jeff Brown. In this book, Stanley is flattened by a bulletin board (but otherwise not hurt). Flat Stanley then discovers that one advantage of being flat is that he can visit faraway friends by traveling in an envelope through the mail.
My job is to write about my adventures with my Flat Friend in my special journey and to collect flat souvenirs that can be glued in my journal for my Flat Friend. I should take my Flat Friend with me everywhere I go. I must be very responsible and know where my Flat Friend is at all times. The journal entries should include the date, location, and at least 5 sentences about the activity. I must return my Flat Friend and my journal to school on Monday, March 19th.
These are just a few ideas of the flat souvenirs that I could collect for my flat friend:
For example, if I go to see a movie, I could save the movie ticket stub and glue it in the journal and write a summary about what movie I saw or write about my favorite part of the funniest part of the movie, etc. If I go to Valle de Angeles then please take a picture of me with my flat friend. Then I could glue the photo in my journal and write about our Trip to Valle de Angeles. If it is not possible to take a picture, I may draw the activity. If we are out at one of my favorite restaurants I could save a menu or napkin form the restaurant and write about why it is my favorite restaurant and what I always like to eat when we go there.
Also, please help me buy postcards during our adventures because they could easily be glued into the journal to write about.
This project encourages writing, creativity, and an appreciation of other cultures. The whole family can get involved and everyone can enjoy it!

Estimados Papá y Mamá:
Hoy he invitado a casa a “Flat Stanley,” quien me debería acompañar en mis aventuras durante una semana. Forma parte de un proyecto de intercambio que hacemos con nuestros “pen pals” de tercer grado de la Escuela East End Elementary localizada en Dacusville, Carolina del Sur.
La idea de este proyecto viene de un libro que leímos en clase llamado FLAT STANLEY de Jeff Brown. En este libro, Stanley se hace chafar (pero sin hacerse daño) por un cartel de anuncios. Después, Flat Stanley descubre que una ventaja de ser plano es que puede visitar amigos lejanos viajando por correo en un sobre.
Mi trabajo es escribir sobre mis aventuras con mi Flat Friend en mi diario especial y coleccionar recuerdos planos que luego puedo pegar en mi diario para mi Flat Friend durante esta semana. Debo ser muy responsable y saber dónde está mi Flat Friend en todo momento. Las entradas del diario deben incluir la fecha, la ubicación, y por lo menos cinco frases de la actividad. Debo regresar mi Flat Friend y mi diario el dia Lunes, 19 de Marzo.
Aquí hay algunas ideas de los recuerdos planos que puedo coleccionar para mi Flat Friend durante estos días:
Por ejemplo, si voy a ver una película, puedo guardar el billete de la película y pegarlo en el diario y escribir un resumen de la película o escribir sobre mi parte favorita o sobre la parte más graciosa de la película, etc. Si voy a Valle de Angeles, por favor me tomas una foto con mi Flat Friend. Después, puedo pegar la foto en mi diario y escribir sobre nuestra aventura en Valle de Angeles. Si no es posible tomar una foto, puedo hacer un dibujo sobre esa actividad. Si vamos a comer en uno de mis restaurantes favoritos, puedo guardar el menú (si es posible) o servilleta del restaurante y escribir porqué es mi restaurante favorito y qué es lo que suelo comer cuando vamos allí.
También, me puedes ayudar a comprar postales durante nuestras aventuras porque éstas pueden pegarse fácilmente en el diario y luego escribir sobre ellas.
Este proyecto promueve la escritura, la creatividad y un aprecio de otras culturas. Toda la familia se puede involucrar y todos lo podrán disfrutar!
