NEWSLETTER WEEK: January 30-Feb.3, 2012


The children had a wonderful time during our 100th Day Celebration. We will continue to enjoy the following days!

This is what we will cover this week:

SPELLING: Patterns for /ar/. Spelling test Friday!

MATH: Fractions: Practice fractions on the mimio board. Ask your child! They are having a wonderful time. Math review and apply concepts, skills, and strategies learned. Math test Thursday.



R/W: Science fiction. Making text to text, text to self and text to world connections. Verbs.

SCIENCE: Soil tests on an unfamiliar mixture. Use of test tubes for different experiments.



DOL (Daily Oral Language): Self correct sentences.

MAP TESTS (Measures of Academic Progress) Tests: Our last MAP test will be applied this coming week. The area evaluated is Language usage. If you have any questions feel free to contact your child’s teacher. Second grade schedule is as follows:

A back to normal week!

This is what we will cover this week:

SPELLING: Patterns for ch and th. Spelling test Friday!

MATH: Fractions: Equal and unequal parts, halves, thirds, and fourths. Identify and show a unit fraction of a region. Estimating fractions. Identify and show fractions of a set of objects.

R/W: Finalize Publication of autobiographies.  Introduction to Singular and Plural Nouns, Pronouns, and Verbs.  Students will begin a unit on Science Fiction and learn to make connections with the text.  Continue reading aloud George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl. 

SCIENCE: Predict, observe and describe what happens when separating soil components by settling. Use of test tubes. Record their results.

DOL (Daily Oral Language): Self correct sentences.

The 100th Day of school will be on Friday, January 27th. Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd will be doing many activities to celebrate this day. In order to prepare for the 100th day of school, we are asking our SECOND GRADERS to dress up as if they are 100 years old! Over the years, there have been many creative costumes consisting of powdered hair, walking sticks, spectacles, gray beards, and many more. Enjoy creating your costume and be ready to model it on Friday 27th.


DPTO Fun Run: Our annual school Fun Run will take place on Saturday, January 28, from 8:30 a.m. There will be the traditional run, games, and a complimentary pancake and fruit breakfast to follow. The pledge forms were sent before the Winter Holiday; however, if you would like an additional copy, please download it from the administrators’ blogs.

NEWSLETTER WEEK: January 17-20, 2012


We are getting back into the school routine. On Wednesday, students will be attending only the first part of the day. This is what we will cover this week:

SPELLING: Patterns for wh and sh. Spelling test Friday!

MATH: Geometry: Recognize and name trapezoids, parallelograms and hexagons. Congruent figures, symmetry, flip, slide and turn.

R/W: Finish writing their autobiographies. Identify nouns, verbs and adjectives in a TIME magazine.

SCIENCE: Soils Unit: Observing soil, exploring the connection between organic matter and soil, using our senses to focus on different sizes of sand, clay and humus. Describing how wet and dry matter feels, and discussing similarities and differences.

DOL (Daily Oral Language): Self correct sentences.

HERE ARE A FEW REMINDERS:

Professional Development Wednesday: Our third Staff Development Wednesday will take place on Wednesday, January 18. This is an early dismissal day (PM Schedule) for students. Please note that we are meeting on the 18th instead of the last Wednesday of the month. Mr. Jose Cordon will lead a training on how to use the Mimio technology.

Parent Workshop: Our school counselor, Ms. Ivonne Casco, will be hosting a workshop for parents on Friday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m.

Do you know the world our children are living in?

Do you know how to talk to your children about their sexuality?

Are you ready to be a parent of a teenager or a pre-teen?

Date: Friday January 20th

Time: 1:30pm to 3:00 p.m.

Where: Discovery School, Grade 3 Classroom

This workshop is geared toward all parents from 2nd grade and up.

We will talk about our ever-changing world and how being aware of those changes will aid in understanding your teens or pre-teens.

 
Sergio, Jairo and Francesca’s Birthday Celebration: Sergio, Jairo and Francesca are cordially inviting all of the second grade students to celebrate their birthdays on the following schedule:

Sergio & Jairo’s -  Thursday, January 19th during lunch time.

Francesca’s-          Friday, January 20th during lunch time.

They will all bring food, cake and drinks. Only pack a snack.

This is what we will cover this week:

SPELLING: The /oo/ sound. Spelling test Friday!

MATH: Geometry unit: Identify solid figures (cone, cube, cylinder, pyramid, rectangular prism, sphere) flat surfaces, vertices and edges.

READ ALOUD: Finish reading George Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl.

R/W: Wrap up our biographies and autobiographies unit.




                                                                              

Martin Luther King Jr.: Second graders have just recently finished studying and reading about his life and his famous speech “I Have a Dream” therefore they will write their own “I Have a Dream” speech during our writing class.

Report Cards and Conferences: Report Cards will be issued on Friday, January 13. This is an early dismissal (AM Schedule) day for students. Conferences are on as needed basis.

Happy New Year! We wish you all the best for 2012. We hope you were able to rest and enjoy the Christmas holiday with your loved ones and friends.

This is what we will cover this week:

SPELLING: Fry’s List Review. No spelling test this short week.
MATH: Review addition and subtraction, money, Problem solving and MAP test review.

READ ALOUD: George Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl.

R/W: Reading comprehension questions. Understanding and following instructions. Journal: Write about their Christmas holiday.

DOL (Daily Oral Language): Self correct sentences.

HERE ARE A FEW REMINDERS TO START OFF THE YEAR!

Sweaters/Jackets and Other Objects: we ask parents to label all their child’s belongings with a permanent marker. This makes it easier for us to help you look for things if they are misplaced or lost. We also ask for your cooperation by sending back with your child any item he/she brings home that does not belong to him, and to notify the homeroom teacher about it (by text message, email or phone call).
